Ten Ways to Treat Burnout

Burnout consists of bodily symptoms and a constant battle in your mind.

As well as dealing with bodily symptoms you have to develop a strategy or concept for coping with and getting rid of stress and clearing your mind of negative thoughts. Simply said "You get what you think about" so if you constantly obsess about doom and gloom guess where you are going to stay...
Here are ten ways of dealing with burnout:

1. Hobbies - Developing a hobby is a good way of shifting your focus away from the cause of stress and the act of distracting the mind in your free time helps to get rid of work or otherwise generated stress.

2. Movement is crucial - the feeling of stress can be reduced greatly through movement by taking part in sport or trying more relaxing activities like going for a walk, pottery, etc. I cannot stress (no pun intended!) how important it is to get off your couch or bed and moving - even if it is down to the shop at the corner of the street.

3. Alternative Medicine - In the realm of alternative medicine there are many strategies for reducing and avoiding stress. The simplest method is to place a hot and damp face cloth over the face for a few minutes - therapy does not need to be expensive!

4. Just Breathe! - Also cheap and easy to implement are breathing exercises which improve the intake of oxygen. Tensing and relaxing different muscle groups can be done anywhere and although highly beneficial is not tiring or inconvenient.

5. Meditation - meditation, yoga and cognitive training are great ways of earthing yourself and making sure that you do not continue to focus on negative thoughts. Meditation does all sorts of other good stuff like reducing the blood pressure, refreshes you and makes you much more receptive to the good things flying around the universe to name a few!

6. Psychotherapy - the most expensive treatment is psychotherapy. However - if you find the right therapist for you then this can give you huge returns on your investment. Therapy has worked for me because we really dug into what in my old "life rules" had led me into burnout twice. Together we re-wrote my life rules and I have turned the new rules into successful new habits.

7. Medicine - What I have not mentioned at all are medicines - alternative and conventional. I have not given any information on these because I reckon I am really not qualified to go into a broad discussion. My personal experience is that the anti-depressant which I took works well and does not create any highs or weird euphoric behaviour. It simply balanced me out and helped to unfreeze my brain so that I could operate as a grown man again. I can write a longer post on my personal experience if this is of interest to everyone.

8. Support Network - This might seem obvious but when you have burnout you tend to become introverted and anti-social. I have had positive experiences from talking to close friends about what I am going through. You will find that true friends and family care about you very much and will go out of their way to help. You may also discover that your friends have had or are going through the same experience - I did and was amazed by who it was!

9. Do Something! - You may find yourself paralyzed by fear. If that is the case then set yourself some goals and plan some actions. By doing that you grab back some control of your life and stop feeling like a leaf being blown around by the wind. This is simple and costs nothing. The bonus is that it works!

10. Order a ton of books - There are some great motivational books out there that do not cost a lot of money. If you own a kindle then you can even find a lot of these great books for free. I particularly like books of quotations and there are plenty of those for free.

The bottom line is that all of the methods that I mention work only so long as you persist with them and make them habits. So keep breathing and get moving!
