How to Supplement Correctly

Supplementation is often advised by many doctors, even naturopathic ones. Using natural herbs and supplements can help with many health conditions or enhance your current health. Many commonly recommended supplements aren't worth taking and will often make things worse in the long run. For instance multivitamins often contain the wrong form of vitamins/minerals (such as folic instead of folate acid) and contain too much or not enough of other vitamins minerals.

There are a few brands of multivitamins/multiminerals worth taking a look at. The garden of life brand of multivitamins are worth looking into. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend getting greens. Greens such as Athletic greens or those you find on amazon or at local food stores contain probiotics, prebiotics, algae, with vitamins and minerals as well. Greens can also easily be mixed into juices, protein drinks/mixes or mixed into food.

Magnesium and vitamin k is a supplement I would advise looking into, especially on a paleo diet. It is difficult to get enough and the right form of vitamin k (get a blend of k vitamins) and also getting enough magnesium as well. They affect many metabolic processes and help run your metabolism and body smoothly. Doctor's best is a good brand for many vitamins, especially magnesium. Chelated magnesium and magnesium citrate are the two best forms to use. Magnesium citrate in liquid or solid form can be used to do a charcoal flush as well, which help with certain health conditions.

Digestion problems is a common area people run into. A very common condition is low stomach acid. It is often confused for high stomach acid or is the cause of acid reflux. Acid reflux medications and supplements should be avoided as over time they can lower stomach acid output. Many other factors can influence digestive health as well, such as stress, amount and quality of sleep and diet as well. Testing is available for stomach acid but it is often expensive and isn't always covered by health insurance.

A much simpler and cheaper test is doing a trial of betaine hcl (stomach acid in supplement form) with digestive enzymes as well. Start with a low dose of stomach acid, and with papaya enzymes and as long as the betaine doesn't cause acid refulx it is very likely you have low stomach acid. Start raising the dosage of stomach acid every 3 days until you get a burning sensation in your throat or acid reflux. From there back down on the dosage to find the proper betaine hcl dose.

To address inflammation in the body and especially the digestive system using castor oil packs may be helpful. Castor oil can be used 4-7 times a week and is done before bed. Warm up the body with a quick bath or shower, then apply castor oil to your whole abdomen area. Wrap your abdomen in a flannel cloth/shirt, towel then heat pad, and let it absorb into your body for 30-45 minutes.

Thyroid and adrenal problems are very common as well. Thyroid issues should be tested for and addressed by a functional medicine practitioner. Taking iodine can help thyroid problems as well but can worsen thyroid problems in some cases. Addressing adrenal problems can help the health of your thyroid as well. Taking adrenal cortex is a good option to take to help regulate your adrenals. Controlling blood sugar by avoiding sugar, and too many carbs can also help your adrenals as well. Furthermore you can take bone broth to help your adrenals as well as your digestive health. Bone broth is fairly simple to make as all it requires is chicken/beef bones, vinegar, garlic, pepper, salt and water.
