Food and Supplements for Cardiovascular Health, Vitality, and Immunity

Healthy mind and body are derived from good diet, exercise, and lifestyle. The food we eat is where we get the nutrients we need for daily life. However, not all of us get enough of the nutrients from food. We need to be more conscious of our food intake and consider taking supplements, especially if we have certain mineral deficiencies or health goals we want to achieve. Here are some types of food and supplements based on individual needs.

Cardiovascular Health

Heart disease is one of the most common causes of deaths in America. In a study done by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, about 600,000 Americans die of heart disease every year. The study shows that 1 in every 4 deaths is caused by heart disease. With that alarming statistics, it is important to be more careful of our health and choose our food carefully. Choosing healthier foods over foods that are high in cholesterol is one step towards preventing heart diseases. Supplements that aim to promote better cardiovascular health like fish oil, plant sterols, B vitamins, green tea, and niacin are recommended for people with heart conditions and high blood pressure. Healthier food choices, some exercise, and the right supplements can improve your heart and overall health.

Immunity

With today's unhealthy environment and surroundings, it is easy to catch a cold or flu. If you also live a hectic and stressful lifestyle, you can be more prone to sickness. Boosting your immunity is one way of giving your body the right nutrients to fight off diseases. With more fruits and vegetables in your diet, your immune system will be stronger in preventing diseases. It is also good to invest in immunity boosters or supplements. People who are prone to illnesses and allergies can consider supplements that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins E, C, Propolis, Beta-carotene, Zinc, and more. Other types of food that are rich sources of immunity boosters are apricots, asparagus, broccoli, plums, onions, apples and raisins.

Vitality

As people reach their prime years, the body and mind can be diminished of its nutrients, youth, and energy. Vitality is key to maintain the mind and body's healthy system and give older people the strength, energy, longevity, and zest for life. There are dietary supplements produced for the purpose of increasing one's vitality and overall health. High levels of essential nutrients and metabolic factors help achieve optimal health.

-->
When the body can't easily absorb and breakdown natural food nutrients during the prime years, potent nutrients from supplements can help you live longer and experience better health and energy. Some vitality supplements like Ginseng are known to boost testosterone levels in males.
When choosing vitality supplements, always make sure that they are safe, proven effective, and natural as much as possible.

For many health requirements and vitamin deficiencies, there are different kinds of supplements to improve the mind and body. However, nothing would work without a well-balanced diet, exercise, and good lifestyle to give you optimal health.

Getting Vitamin K From Food Sources

Compared to other nutrients, vitamin K is the least recognized. Only a few people know about its health benefits. Because of this, many people are deficient in this vitamin. If you wish to increase your intake of vitamin K, you must first learn its various types.

These are:

1. Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) - This type of vitamin K can be found in dark green, leafy vegetables. Experts require intake of K1 to avoid bleeding disorders.

2. Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) - This type of vitamin K is produced by the beneficial bacteria inside your gut. You may also replenish your K2 levels by consuming fermented foods.

3. Vitamin K3 (menadione) - Unlike the first two types of vitamin K, this one is synthetic in nature. Experts do not recommend this, as there are reports of toxicity from this type of vitamin K.

Taking a supplement is a good way to replenish your vitamin K1 and K2 levels. You may also receive them from different foods. For example, K2 is abundant in cultured foods, like natto and certain fermented cheeses. These are readily available in health food stores.

Because K1 is found in many green leafy vegetables, it is easy to obtain. Examples of vegetable sources of K1 are collard greens, spinach, broccoli, salad greens, kale, and Brussels sprouts. Among the said sources, collard greens is the most abundant of vitamin K1. When purchasing this, make sure that the store sells the main stalk with the leaves still attached. Removing the leaves will lessen the vegetable's overall nutrient profile.

To help you enjoy collard greens more, here is a recipe you can try:

Collard Greens with Garlic Spice
Good for five servings

Ingredients:

-->
• 1 large bunch (1.5 pounds) collard greens, or spinach (spinach is also a good source of vitamin K1)
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 medium clove garlic, chopped
• ½ teaspoon of dried chili flakes
• Sea salt and pepper
• 1 lemon, juiced
• Feta cheese (optional)
Procedure:
1. Wash the greens or spinach thoroughly using running water. Dry by patting.
2. Once done, remove the stems and cut the greens into one inch strips.
3. Take a large sauté pan and heat over medium high heat. Place the oil and heat. Cook the garlic for 30 seconds until brown.
4. Next, add the collard greens and chili flakes. Cook until you see the greens wilt. Use salt and pepper to add taste. Then, remove.
5. Before transferring to a serving bowl, add lemon juice.
6. Optional: Add raw feta cheese on top.

Food Is For Fuel - Part 1 - No Other Gods

In the first four articles under "Freedom, Faith and Fitness" we have been laying the foundation upon which we can build a biblical view of health and fitness. We have looked at the first of four proofs that our bodies matter to God--that they have value because God created them. We will continue with our study into why we should take care of our physical bodies, but I have had several requests to start addressing other aspects such as nutrition and exercise. Therefore, today I want to start on a sub-topic--the importance of what we put into our bodies.

I am painfully aware that this is a subject that probably a little too close to home for most of us. Nevertheless, it must be done. We will be looking at what Scripture has to say about a subject that affects every one of us--food. I tell me Pastor friends all the time that if they think that teaching about money in church is a hard sell, they should try talking about food.

Peak Performance

Question: If you owned a million-dollar race horse, how would you take care of it? Would you let him stay up late at night, drink sodas and double mocha lattes, eating pizza, donuts and fried foods? Would you let him lay around on the couch all day watching TV and playing video games? Of course not! Because if you did, he would be become fat, lazy and completely worthless as a race horse.

Maybe you prefer horsepower to actual horses. So let's change the scenario. Suppose you were handed the keys to this $200,000 Lamborghini Gallardo and entrusted with its upkeep. How would you take care of this car? What kind of fuel would you put in it? Regular unleaded? Diesel? Or course not! You would be putting the super premium in this baby. Without the proper fuel, the car cannot run at peak performance; it will not run the way it was designed to run. Can you imagine putting inferior fuel in the high-priced, high-performance machine you had been entrusted with? Of course not!

If we would take great care in how we treated a million dollar race horse or high performance car, shouldn't we take even better care of our bodies which are the temple of the Holy Spirit? Why do we put inferior fuel (food) into these infinitely more valuable marvels of engineering that God has entrusted us with? Putting the wrong kind of fuel into our bodies leads to 1) low energy, 2) low self-esteem, 3) relational conflict, and 4) lack of intimacy. We need to fuel our bodies for peak performance.

INTRODUCTION

If I had a dime for every time I heard someone tell me that God doesn't care what they eat, or how they are NOT giving up this or that food or drink... well, you know the rest. And every time I hear such a statement I cringe because it reveals a deeper and much more serious problem than just food. Are we really saying that there is an area of our life that God doesn't care about and has no business interfering in?

We know from 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our bodies belong to God, that they are His temple, and that we are to glorify Him in them. Built into this commandment is the understanding that our desires are subservient to His. As we are reminded in Scripture that our God is a jealous God. In the very first commandment given to Moses, God states:

"You shall have no other gods before me." (Exodus 20:3 ESV)

Unfortunately, Philippians 3:19, tells us that for many people "their god is their belly." It is even more disturbing to read the entire passage.

"Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things." (Philippians 3:17-19 ESV)

Paul begins by encouraging the Philippian church to imitate his example of Godly living. In direct contrast to Paul's good example, and others like him, verses 18-19 warns against following the example of those whose god is their belly, or appetites. In a broad sense this refers to all the physical desires of the flesh, but certainly includes the stomach and gluttony. In that sense, your god becomes your belly whenever your appetite dictates what you eat and drink regardless of the consequences to your health and the damage it does to your body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Paul also says that these people glory in their shame. In other words they boast about the wrong that they are doing. When we boast about our large size, or our over-eating, or how we have built God a bigger temple, or that we will just get to Heaven sooner, we are glorying in our shame. We wink at our sin and cheapen the grace of God poured out at Calvary. When we do these things, Paul says we are enemies of the cross of Christ and that our end is destruction.

Instead of trying to figure out how far we can go without sinning in what we eat, we should be trying to figure out how we can please Him. After all, Scripture tells us that our FOOD SHOULD GLORIFY GOD!

"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)

How do we eat and drink to the glory of God? Does the act of praying over our meals cover this? One of my favorite foods used to be chicken fried steak. I'm talking about the real Texas chicken fried steak. The kind that's so big it needs it's own plate. So I go to the restaurant, eat a few rolls covered in butter and order a chicken fried steak swimming in a pool of cream gravy with a side of mashed potatoes, also covered in gravy, and some green beans and corn to make sure I get my veggies. And to wash it all down I order a big glass of sweet tea. Sounds good doesn't it? Or maybe that doesn't do it for you. So picture whatever your favorite meal is. Okay, so the food comes and what did I do? I pray and thank God for his provision. That's good. We should do that. The problem comes when I ask God to bless that food to nourish my body and then to use our bodies to His service. Really? That's not asking for a blessing, it's asking for a miracle. Imagine what God is thinking when we ask for him to bless food that defiles His temple. Now some people may argue that as long as you pray over your food it is sanctified and can't hurt you. But the expanding waistlines and accompanying health problems that plague the church are proof that God isn't honoring that prayer. Is it within God's ability to nourish our bodies with that kind of food? Of course it is. But should we even be asking for that?

When Jesus was tempted by Satan, Scripture records:

"Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, "'He will command his angels concerning you,' and "'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"" (Matthew 4:5-6 ESV)

"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone." (Psalms 91:11-12 ESV)
The temptation was for Jesus to defy the laws of nature (gravity in this case) since God would not allow him to suffer the consequences (falling to his death). Jesus did not argue the point.
"Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'"" (Matthew 4:7 ESV)

Instead of asking God to bless the food we have chosen, perhaps it would be better to pray before we order our food and ask Him to help us choose food that will glorify Him and nourish our bodies.

If we agree with Scripture that our body is a temple, and we agree with the first commandment that we are to have no other gods, and we agree that we should glorify God in what we eat and drink, it follows that we should be more careful and deliberate about what we put into our bodies. Ask God to help you make wise food choices that bring glory to Him and health to your body. Find someone to help hold you accountable to your commitment to a God-honoring nutrition plan.

If, like me, nutrition is your biggest struggle, never fear, in addition to delving further into why what we eat matters, I will also be posting nutrition advice from Scripture, science and experience. If there is a subject in particular you would like for me to address, just let me know.

Basic Food Rules for Optimal Health

Food Is Big Business!

Americans spend a whopping $1 trillion dollars a year on food. Food is big business to say the least. The rising health concerns that accompany the rising obesity rates have prompted many food manufacturers to focus on key marketing terms, such as low-fat, whole grain, etc., in order to promote their products. For the food industry, mixed messages and confusion are good for business.
In his book Food Rules, author Michael Pollan said:

As a journalist I fully appreciate the value of widespread public confusion: We're in the explanation business, and if the answers to the questions we explore got too simple, we'd be out of work. Indeed, I had a deeply unsettling moment when, after spending a couple years researching nutrition for my last book, In Defense of Food, I realized that the answer to the supposedly incredibly complicated question of what we should eat wasn't so complicated after all, and in fact could be boiled down to just seven words:

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Basic Guidelines

Eat Real Food

It doesn't take a genius to figure this one out. Basically, man will never improve on what God has created.

"Consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods and beverages within and among the basic food groups while choosing foods that limit the intake of saturated and trans-fats, cholesterol, added sugars, salt, and alcohol."

The problem is that the common sense has to compete with a powerful trillion dollar food industry that bombards us with messages calculated to make us eat more and more of the worst possible food. Generally speaking, there is an inverse relationship between nutritional value and profit when it comes to food. The more you process any food, the more profitable it becomes. The more processed it is, the less nutritional value it retains. That is why we see things like enriched flour. They try to stuff some of the nutrients back in that they processed out. What we end up with is a far cry from what God gave us. Packaged and processed food companies spare no expense to push more of their products on their target market. More than 90 percent of their product sales are made to less than 10 percent of their customers. "In the case of processed food, that coveted 10 percent consists largely of people weighing more than 200 pounds and earning less than $35,000 per year."

In his book, The New Wellness Revolution, economist Paul Zane Pilzer observed:

No expense is spared to hit every psychological button that matters to the target market... Like a deer caught in the scope of a hunter at close range, the target never has chance.

At times, the ruthlessness of the process troubles the consciences of the $200,000-per-year marketing executives in charge of it. Some actually refuse to attend their own focus groups. Rather than confront their future victims in person, they prefer to review transcripts in the safety of their offices.

One of the great scandals of the junk-food culture is the extent to which its most enthusiastic promoters personally avoid the very products they are pushing.

Pilzer goes on to point out:

These food companies do something even worse than targeting lower-income, unhealthy, overweight consumers for their products. Once the target actually tries the product and becomes a customer, company chemists ensure they will never be satisfied with eating just a healthy amount of it.

[They] have been altered to ensure that "nobody can eat just one" of them. This chemical alteration causes great overconsumption, promoting obesity and destroying the natural tendency of our taste buds to seek variety in what we eat.

Perhaps at this point you are beginning to feel a bit of righteous indignation. We have allowed ourselves to be led astray like pigs to the slaughter. I am reminded again of the words of Jesus, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly" (John 10:10 ESV). These things should not surprise us. It is our responsibility to educate ourselves so that we know good from bad. Which brings me back to this point. The single best thing you can do to ensure proper nutrition is to eat primarily unprocessed whole foods. Real food, not edible food-like substances. Real food meaning:
  • Leafy Greens
  • Fruits
  • Lean Proteins
  • Whole Grains
  • Healthy Fats
  • Legumes (beans, peas, etc)
If the majority of your diet consists of real food, you will get better nutrition and feel more satisfied while consuming fewer calories. A good way to make sure you are eating real food is to shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle.

Shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle

You have probably noticed that most supermarkets are laid out the same way: For the most part, fresh food-produce, meat and fish, dairy-are on the outer edge, while processed foods dominate the center aisles. Also, many stores place the organic and whole foods sections on the periphery as well. If you keep to the outer edge of the store you are much more likely to wind up with real food in your shopping cart. This strategy is not entirely fool proof since HFCS, artificial sweeteners and other non-food ingredients have snuck into the dairy case and are hiding in flavored yogurts, pudding and some forms of cheese. Also, good foods, such as brown rice, dried beans, old-fashioned oatmeal, whole-grain pasta, etc. are usually found in one of the inner isles of the store. Still, the less time you spend in the center isles, the better off you are. Think of it as a baseball diamond-when you are running the bases it is best to stick as close to the baseline as possible. Deviate into the infield too much and you will find yourself back on the bench.

Pay More, Eat Less

We have all heard the age-old adage, "you get what you pay for." Food is no exception. Quality is more important than quantity. Pollan observed, "There's no escaping the fact that better food-measured by taste or nutritional quality (which often correspond)-costs more, because it has been grown less intensively and with more care. Not everyone can afford to eat well in America, which is a literal shame, but most of us can."

As with everything else, there is also a cost trade-off. As food costs have declined, food quality has declined and we end up having to eat more food and in reality spending just as much money. You probably end up spending more on health care as well. We complain about range-free organic eggs being $3 a dozen but don't blink at coke in our hands that cost $0.75. If you spend more for better food, you will probably eat less of it, it will probably taste better, and you will be more satisfied. So choose quality over quantity, nutrition over calories. Or as our grandparents used to say, "Better to pay the grocer than the doctor."

Eat When You Are Hungry, Not When You Are Bored

For a lot of us, probably most of us, eating often has very little to do with hunger. We eat when we get bored, or for entertainment, or to comfort or reward ourselves. Make a conscious effort to be aware of why you are eating, and only eat when you are truly hungry. One old wives' test says "If you're not hungry enough to eat an apple, than you're not hungry." Eating out of boredom or for comfort is a very costly antidepressant.

Don't Drink Your Calories

This doesn't mean don't consume beverages that contain calories. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't have protein or meal replacement shakes. It means be careful of what you drink. It is far too easy to get an entire day's worth or even two days worth of calories from a single indulgent drink.
You even have to be careful with many so-called "health drinks." The restaurant industry can easily fool health-conscious consumers with labels like "reduced-calorie." There's nothing "reduced" about a smoothie with more calories than a Quarter Pounder or four times the sugar in a chocolate-frosted cake doughnut.

Do I really even need to mention cokes or sweet tea? Like P90X Creator and Fitness Guru, Tony Horton says, "Drink your water, people!"

Break the rules once in a while

Obsessing over food rules is bad for your happiness and probably for your health too. Far too many people fail because they promise themselves that they will never eat this or that only to break that promise. It is important to have a relaxed, healthy relationship with food. There will always be special occasions where it is okay to throw all of the rules out the window. What matters most is not the special occasion, but the everyday practice. It is one thing to sin, but quite another to live in sin. It is often said, "All things in moderation," but that is an easily abused philosophy. As Bo Bennett said:

The credo of the average American is "all things in moderation". This is the same average American that is about 20 pounds overweight and has a one out of four chance of dying from heart disease.
I prefer the addendum offered by Mark Twain:

"All things in moderation, including moderation."

The Bottom Line

Okay, so we know that we should eat healthier, the way God intended for us to eat. We all know that Krispy Kreme doughnuts are bad for us and that fresh fruit is good for us. Knowing isn't the problem: doing it is another story. Why? Because we are in the habit of eating bad. We have to create a new habit of eating healthy. Since this is a lifestyle, it has to be doable. For starters, it is important to be realistic. A good general plan is to use the 80/20 rule. If you eat clean 80% of the time, you can afford to cheat 20% of the time. Personally, I tend to lean towards 90/10. Part of that is because the longer you eat clean, the less you want to cheat, and the more your body will let you know when you cheat. Not just by an added pound or two but by the way you feel. Once your body gets used to running on the high octane fuel God intended, you will notice that it doesn't run as well on the edible food-like stuff.
