3 Mistakes You Must Avoid When Choosing a Fish Oil Supplement

Fish oils have come under scrutiny lately. Experts and research can't seem to decide whether or not we should actually take omega-3 supplements, or if they are a waste of time and money.
In this article we'll explore what's going on and come to a common sense conclusion. You'll discover some of the mistakes you want to avoid when choosing a supplement, and what to do instead.
Let's start with mistake number one.

1. Focusing on One Study

When you're thinking about supplementation, don't just look at one article or study, look at several. Try to find a consensus of what's going on.

There are articles out there that claim that fish oil supplements have no benefit whatsoever, and then there are articles that claim the opposite.

Which one is true? Look at the consensus. Fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids have been heavily researched for decades. The same answer comes back over and over again, fish oils are beneficial.
Your body needs essential fatty acids to survive, so this isn't about not using them at all. You also have to remember that many studies don't reveal what supplement they used in their trials. A pharmaceutical grade supplement will yield vastly different results from a generic brand.

2. Forgetting Quality

And that brings us to quality. A mistake you must avoid is going for the cheapest option. Now, you don't have to spend a fortune on a good supplement.

You can get a month's worth of high-quality omega-3 pills for under $20, so that's not the problem.
Always look at quality, and look at independent tests. Has the supplement been proven to be pure, safe and effective by outside testing?

3. Not Testing
-->
Finally, you have to be willing to experiment. It's impossible to know how your body will react to omega-3 fatty acids.

What I do know is that a large majority (80%+) of people in the west are deficient in essential fats, which is bad news for their health.

So whatever you do, remember that your body needs these fats. You can get them by eating fish or taking a supplement.

If you have access to pure, wild caught fish, then by all means eat it. But if you don't, then a high-quality supplement may be a viable option.

The Bottom Line

What this comes down to is using your common sense. Don't rely on any one expert, article or study. Look at them all and form your own opinion.

Test a supplement for 30 to 60 days and see how you feel. In most cases, you will notice a difference, especially if you pick the right supplement, or the right source of fish.
Don't worry too much, just start somewhere, and do your best.

How to Supplement Correctly

Supplementation is often advised by many doctors, even naturopathic ones. Using natural herbs and supplements can help with many health conditions or enhance your current health. Many commonly recommended supplements aren't worth taking and will often make things worse in the long run. For instance multivitamins often contain the wrong form of vitamins/minerals (such as folic instead of folate acid) and contain too much or not enough of other vitamins minerals.

There are a few brands of multivitamins/multiminerals worth taking a look at. The garden of life brand of multivitamins are worth looking into. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend getting greens. Greens such as Athletic greens or those you find on amazon or at local food stores contain probiotics, prebiotics, algae, with vitamins and minerals as well. Greens can also easily be mixed into juices, protein drinks/mixes or mixed into food.

Magnesium and vitamin k is a supplement I would advise looking into, especially on a paleo diet. It is difficult to get enough and the right form of vitamin k (get a blend of k vitamins) and also getting enough magnesium as well. They affect many metabolic processes and help run your metabolism and body smoothly. Doctor's best is a good brand for many vitamins, especially magnesium. Chelated magnesium and magnesium citrate are the two best forms to use. Magnesium citrate in liquid or solid form can be used to do a charcoal flush as well, which help with certain health conditions.

Digestion problems is a common area people run into. A very common condition is low stomach acid. It is often confused for high stomach acid or is the cause of acid reflux. Acid reflux medications and supplements should be avoided as over time they can lower stomach acid output. Many other factors can influence digestive health as well, such as stress, amount and quality of sleep and diet as well. Testing is available for stomach acid but it is often expensive and isn't always covered by health insurance.

A much simpler and cheaper test is doing a trial of betaine hcl (stomach acid in supplement form) with digestive enzymes as well. Start with a low dose of stomach acid, and with papaya enzymes and as long as the betaine doesn't cause acid refulx it is very likely you have low stomach acid. Start raising the dosage of stomach acid every 3 days until you get a burning sensation in your throat or acid reflux. From there back down on the dosage to find the proper betaine hcl dose.

To address inflammation in the body and especially the digestive system using castor oil packs may be helpful. Castor oil can be used 4-7 times a week and is done before bed. Warm up the body with a quick bath or shower, then apply castor oil to your whole abdomen area. Wrap your abdomen in a flannel cloth/shirt, towel then heat pad, and let it absorb into your body for 30-45 minutes.

Thyroid and adrenal problems are very common as well. Thyroid issues should be tested for and addressed by a functional medicine practitioner. Taking iodine can help thyroid problems as well but can worsen thyroid problems in some cases. Addressing adrenal problems can help the health of your thyroid as well. Taking adrenal cortex is a good option to take to help regulate your adrenals. Controlling blood sugar by avoiding sugar, and too many carbs can also help your adrenals as well. Furthermore you can take bone broth to help your adrenals as well as your digestive health. Bone broth is fairly simple to make as all it requires is chicken/beef bones, vinegar, garlic, pepper, salt and water.

Krill Oil Is an Amazing Health Supplement

Over the years' health supplements of different types have gained in popularity, but none are thought to be as amazing as supplements made from Krill oil. This is a product that is high in omega-3 in a bioactive form, phospholipids and Astaxanthin, which is said to be one of the most powerful antioxidants within the carotenoid family and more than 10 times powerful than any fish oil, which is sold on the market.

People who may not be aware of the benefits of Krill oil will do well to know the following;

· This has the capability of lowering cardiovascular diseases by up to 45%
· It has dramatic effects on arterial clogging.
· Causes reduction in heart inflammation
· Can minimize dangerous levels of triglycerides
· It reduces LDL and increases HDL cholesterol levels in the body.
· It improves symptoms of PMS.
· Can improve the functionality of the brain and memory
· It helps in reducing the distress and pain related to stiff joints.

Krill oil is taken from a tiny shrimp like organism, which is the primary food of whale sharks. The Norwegian language defines krill as whale food. Manufacturers extract oil from this organism and deliver it in the form of capsules for the benefit of people who wish to take advantage of the amazing properties which it has. Supplements manufactured using krill from Antarctica are perhaps considered the best because of the pristine conditions of the waters.

How Does Krill Oil Work?

Oil taken from the Krill contains fatty acids, which are similar to those found in fish. The fatty acids found in the Krill are thought to be beneficial in reducing swelling on the body, lowering cholesterol and in keeping away blood platelets from getting sticky. The platelets that do not become sticky are less likely to clog thereby eliminating clots within the blood.

This product is particularly useful for those with high blood pressure, depression, cancer and strokes. Evidence has also been found that the supplement is useful in reducing LDL cholesterol, which is considered as bad for the body.

Krill oil is supposed to be safe for all except for those who may be allergic to seafood, could be required to have surgery soon and among women who could be pregnant or even nursing. People requiring surgery are warned to stay away from this supplement because it can slow down the clotting within the blood. It also interacts with anticoagulants and some weight reducing drugs that are commonly taken by people affected by strokes or even those that may be overweight.
Even though there are many benefits of Krill oil it is suggested that users consult their physician or pharmacist before beginning to use this supplement for the amazing properties it has.

Which Whey Protein Supplement Should You Use?

By Russ Howe

Given that it's January, there are thousands of guys around the world joining gyms and asking how to build muscle. Lots of them are jumping into the world of supplements. But how do you know which whey protein is best for you?

As thousands of people begin new keep-fit ventures at the start of the year, it's almost impossible to miss the array of health and fitness products being promoted by supermarkets and local stores looking to cash in on the trend. However, to avoid wasting your hard earned money you need to take a few seconds to establish what you're actually looking for.

One of the biggest misunderstandings in the health and fitness industry is the importance played by dietary supplements. If you are to believe everything you read on the packaging, you'll undoubtedly begin feeling as if you need to be taking dozens of products in order to achieve any results. This is far from the truth.

However, while the industry itself may thrive upon confusing consumers in a bid to get them to part with more cash each month, the actual information at the foundation of each product is quite straightforward and simple. Much like a muscle building routine, not much has changed over the last 20 years despite the scientific advancements which have been made.

The three items below will help you to decipher whether a product is as 'essential' as it claims to be.

* Look at the first ingredient.

* How much protein is provided in each serving?

* As well as the protein content, take a look at the carbohydrate count.

Lets run through the three key points given above and show you why they are so important to finding the right product for your body type and goals. First of all, what is the first ingredient listed on the tub?

The main difference between the three different forms of whey is the speed in which they are digested by your muscles. After a workout, you want to hit your muscles fast and hard with quality nutrition. A hydrolized product is ideal here, but you can also opt for an isolate or even concentrate, which is the original blend. The huge differences in price don't reflect the quite small differences in the speed of digestion, so don't worry if you're on a budget.

The next thing for consideration is the amount of protein you will be getting from each shake. Don't be fooled into believing that more is better. Our bodies can only handle 20-30 grams at any one time, with the rest being excreted as waste. So don't worry too much about those products which claim to hit you with 50+ grams in each shake.

Finally, you'll need to take a look at the carbohydrate content within your chosen brand. This is how to separate products between those ideal for people trying to get leaner, as opposed to those trying to pack on serious size in a short space of time. If you are trying to get bigger, carbohydrates will become your best friend. If you're trying to figure out how to build muscle but stay lean at the same time, your protein shake should provide a very low carbohydrate content. Preferably, aim for under 8 grams.

Now that you know the three most important factors in a supplement, you'll be able to figure out which whey protein is best for you using the simple steps shown above. If you are about to delve into the supplement market for the first time you will now be able to do so in confidence.
